What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to any metal parts that are used by both industries and private consumers. The powder used for this process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin that is electrostatic-ally sprayed onto the surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surface until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality and attractive finish.
What can be Powder Coated?
Any metal part can be powder coated. However, power coating has some limitations such as excessive heat and high powder cure temperatures. Anywhere a chrome pipe "blues" or discolors from high heat is too hot for power coating. Another limitation is powder coating parts that contain lead solder such as radiators, heater cores, metal gas tanks, etc. The powder cure temperature is high enough to cause lead solder to soften and sometimes start to melt.
Paint or Powder Coating?
Powder Coating is significantly more durable than conventional wet paints. Powder Coating is extremely resistant to chips, abrasion, heat, UV light and various chemicals. It is environmentally friendly with no hazardous materials, vapors or disposal concerns, can be less expensive than liquid coatings with superior results possible. Powder Coating offers a wide selection of OEM and custom colors available including translucent, textures and metallic, with a consistent application that has no runs, drips or sags.
